MSI GE75 Raider Review

MSI has brought forth another wave of hype. It unveiled the new MSI GE75 Raider gaming laptop recently. Despite the slightly monotonous race among brands to come up with fancier and smarter specs in the gaming laptops, MSI has succeeded in catching the attention of the masses. How? By coming up with a combination of two heavy features put together in a compact form. It has us in awe really.

MSI GE75 Raider – Review

MSI GE75 Raider is the world’s first gaming laptop with GeForce GTX 1070 in a 17-inch thin bezel laptop. The revolutionary thing here is that usually gaming laptops with powerful graphics card weigh a lot, need a constant power source and are rather more or less a desktop replacement. So to have it all in a lightweight laptop sounds something every gamer would want to get their hands on.

Although as promising as it sounds, does it really live up to the hype? Also, we’re skeptic about the fact that does putting together a combination of powerful graphics and compact size neglect other performance features? Continue reading as we review it step by step for you.

Upon first look, the machine screams the word ‘power’. The MSI logo of a dragon is what seems to be the literal inspiration for this. The chassis features the diamond cut design, another reason for all the attention. The finish is reflective, a steel grey with two carved lines running vertically across. They’re lit up. Almost like a dragon’s spine. In fact, the entire look is one of a kind and has a 3D effect.

The MSI logo is placed right in the center. When the machine is in use, the logo remains lit up. The exhaust vents are visible from the sides. They’re spacious and somehow made to look aesthetic as well.

From beneath, the company has done an amazing job in our opinion. The entire base is adorned in asymmetrical patterns that reminded us of advanced alien warships. Without a doubt, it’s a beautiful piece of art and machine.

Keyboard: The keyboard is spacious. The keys have silver lining printing appealing to the entire ‘dragon’ aesthetics going on. Like the majority of gaming laptops, it also sports RGB-backlighting of keys. What makes a slight difference here is that it utilizes the SteelSeries Engine 3 gaming keyboard setup and an application to do so. The keys light up in sync with gaming going on as well. The SteelSeries also allow various features, among which are keyboard configurations as per the user’s taste. Such as Aqua, Disco, Roulette and Horizontal Wave.

Speaker: Apart from looking like a beast, the MSI GE75 Raider sounds like a one too. It features the Dynaudio speaker setup containing two 3-watt speakers and two 3-watt woofers. Overall it has a 40 percent gain in raw volume over its predecessor.

The audio output has been far overlooked in many great gaming laptops. Considered usually as a consolation prize, good audio has been considered just an added bonus really. Good audio output? Win-win. Average or poor audio? No biggie. One might as well use a gaming headphone.

In certain games like Fortnite, PUBG or PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, relying on the surrounding sound gives the player a tactical advantage over others. Lets you outsmart and outplay enemies much better with a audio output as great as this.

The 17.3-inch IPS standard display appears massive because of the 5.7 mm thin-bezel. It makes up an 82% of the screen-to-body ratio which offers a wider display, better viewing angles and a larger than life visual experience. MSI has done a great job evolving the display in this direction as compared to the previous generation.

The 144 Hz refresh rate is another feature. The company claims an outstanding and never seen before 3 ms response time as well. The display is buttery smooth. The visuals are vibrant with color reproduction very flattering. The blacks are very accurate and very minimal shadows can be seen when viewing from different angles.

MSI GE75 Performance

The MSI GE75 is equipped with the latest 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processors. These offer an overall average of 40 percent more performance improvements as compared to its predecessors. Paired with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, in theory, the MSI GE75 Raider offers gamers plenty of storage space.

Performance wise, we ran various tests through which the MSI GE75 passed with flying colors. It scored a remarkable 91% in gaming along with its ability to glide through all the high load games set at high resolution and ultra level settings. Furthermore, it did not break a sweat while playing 3D games either. It scored a significantly high score of 4,857 in our Final Fantasy XV Benchmark test set at ultra high settings.

In our PC Mark 10 test, it performed great with a score of 7,699. Its 16GB RAM supports multitasking and heavy-duty gaming performance. Editing pictures or rendering videos will not be an issue either.

An additional feature is the MSI App Player. It has been developed to make sure of a great mobile gaming experience on a PC. It allows the user to run multiple apps simultaneously while relying on a secure internet connection. This improves the entire online gaming experience, using a mouse and keyboard controls. This allows efficient mobile gaming even when the user is not around the PC.

The MSI GE75 Raider is a stand-alone piece of machine. The company does not offer any wide range of options for configurations. Although for these series, there is the sole option of choosing between two models housing different graphics cards. The price varies accordingly.

Should I Buy MSI GE75 Raider?

A compact, simple, powerful and clean cut machinery put together to provide a solid gaming experience. This is how we define the MSI GE75 Raider experience. Its light and portability are very practical aspects. The thin-bezel is an appeal all on its own. Performance wise, it impresses.
