Design

The design of the ASUS ROG G703GI is very elegant as compared to other gaming laptops. Recently we are observing a trend of sleek gaming laptops with Max-Q designs such as Dell G7 but this one is a total desktop replacement just like Gigabyte Aorus X9 DT. We have to admit it has a sharp and elegant design. It gives a sheer feeling of having a copper/aluminum material which strikes like a metal armor. The grey metallic flashy color and the solid built makes it quite. There’s a ROG logo at the backside which glows consistently when the laptop is in use just like old MacBook pros.

The front-end of the ASUS ROG G703GI has a large 17.3-inch screen and dimensions of 16.73 x 12.55 x 2.01 inches which comes out to be about 4.7 kg. This is pretty average for a high-end laptop like this. Alienware 15 R5 is about the same weight. To give its user a good gaming performance with low lags and minimum heat emission; the ROG G703GI offers huge air vents.

There are 4 ports on the backside of ASUS ROG G703GI, 3 on the right and 5 on the left. The ports included are microphone Input & headphone output, LAN, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, Thunderbolt 3, SD Card reader and Ethernet port for your comfort. There are also two power ports available for two large power supplies that sometimes seems inconvenient.

ASUS ROG G703GI’s keyboard comes with some backlit options. You can change the backlit from “Aura” button which operates through ROG Aura software and helps to customize the RBG lighting according to your own preference. For launching the XSplit Gamecaster, there’s a button as well with a camera logo. The responsive touchpad is on the left side of the machine.

Display & Webcam

The ASUS ROG G703GI’s screen is delivered in 17.3-inch FHD resolution with G-sync display which strongly supports the gaming environment and the graphics are provided through NVIDIA GTX 10 series chipset GTX 1080. As compared to this, other laptops have higher figures but this makes them enough sharper by creating a contrast ratio of 1278:1. This ratio helps in creating uniformity and different viewing angles. The Asus G703GI offers 144 Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time just like its competitor MSI GS65 Stealth Thin which is no doubt one of sleekest and prettiest gaming laptop out there. It gives you an exceptional video and gaming experience but still lacks a 4K screen option even in this price range.

A 4K screen could be a problem as well. You cannot play latest gaming titles on 4K sometimes due to low and poor fps and the battery goes empty pretty fast. We have seen such incidents with laptops like MSI GS73 Stealth.

The standard 720p webcam quality is pretty okay which produces a good canvas for the image on ASUS ROG G703GI.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Asus ROG G703GI’s keyboard provides a solid base which is quite preferable for a gaming laptop. Keys are at a distance of 2.5mm from each other with dimensions of 42.5 cm x 16.73 cm which makes it a quite wide keyboard. Although the keyboard is not as good as the one on Gigabyte Aorus X9 DT but the layout of the keyboard is good enough so, the typing comfortability is reliable. We mentioned above that the best part about this keyboard is that they have given shortcut buttons to launch the applications like ASUS Gaming Center app, XSplit Gamecaster, the Xbox Gamebar, etc. directly. The companies usually avoid giving these special keyboard buttons because of their malfunctioning after some time.

The touchpad on the left side can be awkward for some gamers. My palm was touched on various occasions with the touchpad during my Fortnite gameplay on ASUS ROG G703GI which made my gaming experience somewhat annoying but it could just be me. It really depends on the person how he uses “WASD” keys during his gameplay. You can always opt for a mouse if you find it hard to scroll 17.3-inch screen on routine tasks.

Gaming & Graphics

Nvidia GeForce TX 1080 (8B GDDR5X) is more than enough to suit your current and latest gaming needs on ASUS ROG G703GI even on high settings. The revolutionizing new GPUs added in it has made it a strong gaming weapon. This architecture helps in maintaining an unbeatable energy efficiency which helps to experience breakthrough the VR emersion. It is a core VR machine and you can use your VR gadgets such as HTV Vive, Oculus Pro or Oculus RIft to enrich your experience.

We tested following games at ultra settings 1080p and rendered following average results.

It gives the gamer equally comfortable gaming experiences with V-Sync turned on while playing State of Decay 2 and Far Cry 5, running at an average 120 fps.

Performance

The ASUS ROG G703GI-XS99K has latest 2.9GHz Intel Core i9 processor which is made specifically for these high-end gaming laptops. With the latest processor, a high-end graphics card GTX1080 and more than enough 64GB RAM; We have tried various games on it; I literally enjoyed spamming Storm Spirit on Dota 2. It has knocked MSI GS65 Stealth in fps benchmarks due to its solid build. The machine performed remarkably just like its competitor Alienware 17 R5 on our benchmarking test.

We could not be able to try it in summers or hot weather as we are enjoying a much chilled and cold winter here in Australia. But one of our team members claimed to have some slight issue of heat ejection from vents on both sides of the system when put on the bed. But, it’s something which could be avoided easily. Use a proper gaming table next time alright? You will get a preinstalled Windows 10 Professional version installed on ASUS ROG G703GI. Of course, it comes with lots of preinstalled ASUS software. They usually slow down your laptop in the start but once you filter them out; you will find it quite responsive due to superfast NVM PCIe SSDs.

Battery Life & Heat

The battery life is one of the most important things when you are going to purchase a laptop or a smartphone. But gets more important on a gaming laptop because you would always require extra hours for playing. We have seen gaming laptops with an average 1-hour gaming time like MSI GS65 and some other which can go for about 2.5 hours on medium brightness such as Dell Inspiron 15 7000. There is 71WHrs, 8-cell Li-ion battery installed in ASUS ROG G703GI. Our testing showed a full charge can give you about 50 minutes on a game of Dota 2 online. This is pretty average but for this laptop almost equal to what we have seen in Gigabyte Aorus X9 DT. It’s below average considering its very expensive and there is no 4k Screen. But make sure this laptop needs 2 power supplies to charge it properly.

There’s a slight issue of heat ejection from vents on both sides of the system in warm weather. As discussed before; this is a desktop replacement and it needs to put on a proper gaming table instead of playing on the bed. The solid build guarantees minimal heat levels throughout. But this thing comes at a cost. Its noisy during gameplay. Sometimes its noisy on normal use as well. This is because of its fan which keeps the temperature normal inside.

Cheaper options like Dell G7 7588 or Dell Inspiron 15 7000 behave really good when it comes to heat problems when playing games.

Configurations

You can choose from 2 variants of ASUS ROG G703GI at the moment. If you are a true hardcore gamer and does not care about money, then go for Intel core i9-8950HK processor which will make sure to give you a splendid gaming experience together with 64GB of Ram and GTX 1080 GB graphics card. The cheaper one comes with an Intel Core i7-8750H Processor, 17.3-inch 1080p G-Sync display, overclocked Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, two 256GB PCIe SSD and a 1TB hard drive. There are not many configuration options, you just need to ask yourself whether you want an Intel Core i7 or i9 and how much storage do you need.

Verdict: Asus ROG G703GI Review

Asus ROG G703GI is one of the premium gaming laptops introduced in 2018 which we reviewed. You need to be rich to have it but you won’t need to replace it anytime sooner due to maxed out latest components. We won’t say it has everything you need but it sure won’t disappoint you. You’ll be amazed by its gaming experience and a solid structure but we’ll warn you about its battery life and traditional FHD screen. It sure cannot replace a true desktop gaming PC but it can be proved a good investment for your gaming competitions. The TechSeer will give it an 8.2 out of a solid 10.
